You can think of SEM as the umbrella that SEO and PPC campaigns fall under.

While SEO should never be neglected, it is a piece of the SEM puzzle. The PPC element will help the speed at which your site can rank higher on search results.

Search engines like Google place PPC ads above organic search results. Meaning you can pay to have your ad potentially seen above highly ranked organic results. A huge benefit for new websites, looking to dramatically increase their brand awareness.
